Kefalonia Carnival 2025: Argostoli, Lixouri, and Sami in Carnival spirit

Kefalonia is donning its festive attire and preparing to welcome Carnival 2025 with abundant cheer and spontaneity. The island's three municipalities, Argostoli, Sami, and Lixouri, play lead roles in this multi-day celebration. With events full of color, music, dance, and humor, the organizers promise unforgettable moments for locals and visitors. We were able to elicit interesting information from the authorities about what is to come on our island in just a few days.

Argostoli: A carnival full of tradition and surprises

This year's Carnival in Argostoli promises a rich program with activities and events that will delight both young and old. The Advisor to the Mayor of Argostoli for cultural affairs, Victor Rouchotas, speaking to kefalonianglobe.com, presented this year's detailed program, setting the tone for the event.

The opening of the Carnival and the coronation of the queen

The carnival officially begins on February 8, with the coronation of the queen, who this year will be 13-year-old Christina Kalafati, a rhythmic gymnastics athlete. The program is enriched with the Hidden Treasure hunt, which will take place in two phases, on February 15-16 and 22-23, offering opportunities for fun and surprises.

On February 16, the Carnival begins in Livatho, in the grove of Kallithea in Lakithra. On Tsiknopempti (Smoky Thursday), February 20, the center of Argostoli will be filled with aromas of grilled meat from souvlaki and traditional rizogalo (rice pudding). In the afternoon, there will be a folk orchestra in the square, while the souvlaki and rizogalo will be prepared on site by the Cultural Association "Valsamo". At the same time, the members of the cultural associations "Ballos" and "Xomerou" will provide dance rhythms. On February 21 and 22, the Kefalonian Wedding will be presented at the "Kefalos" theater by the Rifortso Cultural Association.

On February 28, the night parade will take place from Argostoli Square to Lithostroto, with the participation of all groups and the queen.

On March 1, a children's dance will be organized on the ground floor of the theater, while on the afternoon of Sunday, March 2, the grand carnival parade will take place. Clean Monday, March 3, will be celebrated with the traditional "Koulouma" (picnic) in Argostoli and Skala, with folk orchestras and delicious treats.

The Carnival in Argostoli, as Mr. Rouchotas explains, has always had an element of satire. Kefalonians have always satirized political events.

Reasons to choose Kefalonia for Carnival

In Kefalonia, as Mr. Rouchotas emphasizes, visitors will get to know the beautiful island and its traditions, combining tourism and culture. "This year's Carnival is early in the winter, and we are working intensively to complete the events. More than 1,000 carnivalgoers will participate, while the Municipality of Argostoli, in collaboration with cultural associations, is running the event. The events are expected to conclude with a big concert on March 2." Carnival events will take place throughout the municipality from one end to the other, with great participation from locals and visitors.

Last year, let's remember, the big concert hosted the famous singer, Anastasia.

Sami: The great return of Sami Carnival

The revival of the Sami Carnival is described by Dimitris Mandalis, secretary of the Poulata Cultural Association "To Agkalaki", highlighting the goals of this initiative.

    Goals and collaborations

"This is the first time a carnival will be held in Sami after many years," Mr. Mandalis initially states, and continues by explaining that this decision came from the collaboration of the cultural associations of the Municipality of Sami, with four main goals. "The first goal is the revival of the carnival culture that was once vibrant in the area, but over the years declined and eventually disappeared.

The second goal is to foster cooperation among cultural associations. This is the first time such a collaboration has existed in the Municipality of Sami, where all associations from the three municipal communities are working together to achieve a common goal – the organization of a large artistic event. The participation of the school community of the Municipality, sports clubs, and of course, the Municipality of Sami, which actively supports this initiative, is also important.

The third goal is to create activity during the winter in the area, strengthening the local economy and offering more entertainment opportunities for residents and visitors. The two-day events (February 15-16) have been designed to attract people from all over Kefalonia, bringing life to the town and boosting local businesses. The reason we chose the second weekend is not to coincide with the events of the other municipalities and thus be able to participate in and enjoy the events throughout the island.

The following cultural associations are actively participating to collectively guarantee, that is, the Sami Cultural Association "Aigialos", the Agia Efthimia Cultural Association ("To Fanari"), the Erissos Cultural Association ("O Faros"), the Pyrgos Cultural Association ("To Pyrgi") and the Poulata Cultural Association "To Agkalaki" the best possible result.

In the coming years, if all goes well, we could expand our actions and events even further.

Finally, the fourth goal is entertainment, with everyone participating in carnival events, dancing, and masquerades."

    The program of events

Sami's carnival events will take place on February 15 and 16. On Saturday, there will be events for children, such as art workshops, carnival mask making, as well as the "Hidden Treasure Hunt" for older age groups. At the same time, there will be artistic events in the town.

On Sunday, the grand carnival parade will take place on Sami beach, culminating in a big concert that will set the festive tone for the day. During the parade, schools, sports clubs, and local communities that have already shown great interest and enthusiasm will participate.

Clean Monday will be celebrated traditionally, as every year, with the established "Koulouma" and other events.

The aim this year is to attract people and have the greatest possible participation. The carnival in the form it is organized this year is something new and unprecedented for the area.

    Call to visitors

"We invite everyone, not only from the Municipality of Sami but from all over Kefalonia, to contribute and have fun together," Mr. Mandalis emphasizes.

It is noted that on Sunday, from the morning, there will be live broadcasts from Sami beach, happenings and interviews, offering a complete carnival experience to all participants.

    Lixouri: Satire at the forefront!

For the Lixouri Carnival, Ms. Eleni Loukeri, the Deputy Mayor of Culture, gave us a complete picture, befitting its reputation, stressing that satire is the trademark of the event, with a tradition of over 70 years.

    Humor and hot current affairs

"Satire is what distinguishes the Lixouri Carnival," stated Ms. Loukeri, emphasizing that the groups and carnivalgoers choose current affairs topics, whether local or global, approaching them in a good-natured and satirical way.

"We, as a Municipality, will this year criticize issues related to projects that have been prolonged and not completed, and are very important for the area, as well as issues from Greek current affairs that have caused a lot of commentary both on social media and in the daily lives of Greeks," reveals Ms. Loukeri.

    Organization and participation

Preparation begins every year, two months before the start, with the Carnival Committee, consisting of volunteer Lixouri residents, working closely with the construction team, creating floats that convey strong messages. "Last year, because we wanted something spectacular with color, we used the dragon and presented the theme 'The Dragon of Accuracy', which plagued and still plagues our country and beyond. We had a float with electricity bills in various colors, while another float was dedicated to Nikola Farandouris, who has now been elected MEP, because he was a personality you 'found everywhere in front of you'," she describes.

The groups of carnivalgoers touch on many different topics. There are many groups with a long tradition, such as the Psichalismenoi Lixouriotes and the Oraioi Neoi. Groups from the town's shops also participate, as well as carnival groups that have been formed, such as "Pare Patera Podarakia" (Take Father Little Feet), as well as cultural associations and schools.

"There are groups that dedicate their soul to the carnival. That is the difference that makes the Lixouri Carnival successful. People do it spontaneously, the carnival mentality has been cultivated," the deputy mayor points out.

We usually have around 50 crews ranging from 30 people up to 200. "Certainly, we are talking about a large number of carnivalgoers for a small town. As Grigoris Arnaoutoglou, last year's presenter, famously said, 'We thought they were leaving, changing costumes, and coming back!'"

In festive rhythms for 17 days

The carnival begins on February 16 and lasts 17 days, which are rich in events, workshops, parties, and many different activities.

Most events take place in the town's central square, as it is an open space that can accommodate people. The "Carnival City" is set up there, while on the coastal roads there are wooden houses, from which various activities start.

The big concert will take place on March 2 in the central square, and this year a "secret" band will give rhythm to the event. It's not just a concert, but an experience!

The town, all its central points, is decorated with lights reminiscent of carnival shapes, colorful banners, and a large Maypole that covers the entire square. The decoration starts after February 10, to create the festive atmosphere.

The love of Lixouri residents for carnival and personalities

"The Lixouriotes have cultivated a unique carnival mentality," said Ms. Loukeri, adding that the carnival is supported each time by the municipal authorities all these years and is an integral part of their cultural identity.

Specifically, the deputy mayor explains that, due to the smaller size of the town, and because satire is deeply rooted in the culture of Lixouri residents, it is easier to satirize any topic, without misunderstandings.

It is noted that the Lixouri Carnival has highlighted important personalities, such as Leandros, Vangelis Aravantinos, and the Kolompaioi, one of the carnival's oldest groups. "Every year we eagerly await to see what they will present!" concludes the deputy mayor.

One island, three carnivals – Fun, satire, and tradition

Kefalonia is preparing to welcome the carnival with three separate events in Argostoli, Sami, and Lixouri. Whether you prefer the satire of Lixouri, the tradition of Argostoli, or the modern touch of Sami, the options are many and fun is guaranteed!
