A special event by Lixouri General High School on autism and children's books

With sensitivity, creativity, and substantial participation, the Lixouri General High School attended a special event dedicated to informing about autism and the value of children's books. The event, held on the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day and International Children's Book Day, highlighted the importance of acceptance, empathy, and inclusion, sending a strong message of humanity and culture.
On Thursday, April 2nd, at 10:00 a.m., at the Iakovateios Library in Lixouri, students from the Lixouri General High School, as part of an approved School Activities Program, participated in an awareness and information event on autism and children's books.
The event was co-organized by the Disabled Persons' Union "YPERION", the Supervisory Board, and the Association of Friends of the Iakovateios Library, aiming to cultivate attitudes of acceptance and inclusion, as well as to highlight the timeless value of books as a means of understanding, empathy, and personal cultivation.
During the event, the social worker of the Disabled Persons' Union "YPERION", Ms. Alexandratou Eva, informed the public about autism, placing particular emphasis on the need to shaped a society that does not treat diversity with caution, but with respect, understanding, and acceptance of each individual's uniqueness.
Particularly moving was the recitation of the poem "In the Spectrum of the Soul" by Mr. Gerasimos Legatos, while a special place in the event was also the narration of the fairy tale "The Shoes of Others" by Ms. Korina Katsouri, who eloquently highlighted the importance of empathy.
Subsequently, the 1st grade high school students of Lixouri General High School presented a paper on the role of books in shaping human thought and emotions. As part of their presentation, they dramatized an excerpt from the work "The Book Thief", highlighting the power of words and knowledge as means of resistance, hope, and freedom.
The program was further enriched with readings of excerpts from beloved children's books, poetry recitations, as well as poster presentations by the Petritsio High School and the EPAL Lixouri.
The event clearly showed that the degree of civilization of a society is reflected in the way it embraces diversity and ensures equal opportunities for participation for all. Acceptance, after all, is not a passive attitude, but an active process of learning, understanding, and adaptation.
Recognizing the value, dignity, and uniqueness of individuals on the autism spectrum is a fundamental prerequisite for shaping a fair, cohesive, and truly humane society. Only through empathy, respect, and continuous information can an environment be built in which diversity is not merely tolerated, but appreciated as a source of richness and evolution.
Warm thanks are extended to all organizers and participants for this valuable experience, which enhanced understanding and respect for diversity.
