You, which Ionian festival will you visit first this year? | Alternative and... not!

'Or perhaps the question would be "which festival will steal your heart this year?". Will you dance to traditional folklore rhythms or get lost in the magic of classical music? Will you surrender to the flavors of Ionian cuisine or explore more alternative forms of art? Whatever you're looking for, one thing is for sure: summer in the Ionian Islands is synonymous with celebration!

Text follows - Save the list, and thank me later!

Pali Ekei Music Festival – Kefalonia's music celebration

The Pali Ekei Music Festival took place last year (2024) for the second consecutive year in Lixouri, Kefalonia, offering two days full of music and unique experiences. The festival hosted different events in two separate locations. Its name, inspired by the Paliki region, reflects the local identity and the island's special natural beauty.

From a beach party… to a big festival

The festival's story began in 2008, when a group of seven friends organized their first impromptu beach party, Amnesia The Party, on a beach in Lixouri. Over the years, the group eventually grew both in age and number of people and so did their vision. The event evolved, changed locations, and became talk of the town, until in 2022 the Municipality of Lixouri entrusted them with the organization of a festival in the town's port – and its success was enormous.

Now, the same group aims to establish it as the largest festival in the Ionian, a cultural landmark that will attract visitors from Greece and abroad.

Saristra Festival - The alternative festival where the past meets the present

The Saristra Festival was born in 2012 and has been held every summer since in Palia Vlachata, Sami, Kefalonia. Inspired by a group of locals who wanted to keep the village's history alive, the festival breathes new life into a place that was completely destroyed by the 1953 earthquake.

Its name comes from the main square of the village, "Saristra", a place that once buzzed with life, with residents who created their own stories there. In a few minutes, the earthquake turned the village into ruins, leaving only memories behind. Today, the Saristra group attempts to preserve this cultural heritage, transforming the festival into a bridge between the old and the new.

A postmodern panigiri (fair) in the heart of summer

The Saristra Festival is not just a musical event – it is a holistic experiential experience. In a setting where nature intertwines with ruins and art, the festival hosts:

    • Concerts with contemporary artists
    • Visual installations & exhibitions
    • Film screenings
    • Workshops, yoga and discussions
    • Gastronomic experiences with wine & cocktails

    PAXOS FESTIVAL

Paxos Music Festival - Papakaliatis videos ON

The Paxos Music Festival is one of the most important cultural institutions of the island, with a history dating back to 1986. Its founder was the English music lover John Gough, who envisioned a festival dedicated to showcasing new talents and disseminating quality music to the Paxos audience.

From its first organization, the festival had a twofold purpose: to provide talented Greek and foreign musicians with the opportunity to study and perform chamber music works and, at the same time, to bring the local community into contact with various musical sounds. John Gough not only organized and funded the festival until his death in 2006, but also created the Paxos Festival Trust Ltd in England in 1987, ensuring the continuation of the event.

After Gough, his close friend Nicholas Thompson took over his work, maintaining the quality and prestige of the festival. Over the years, the institution has hosted distinguished artists who now play a leading role in the international music scene, such as Leonidas Kavakos (violin), Dionysis Vervitsiotos (violin), Christoforos Stamboglis (bass), Lefki Karpoudis (piano), and many others.

Today, the Paxos Music Festival continues to be a point of reference for the cultural and tourist life of the island, strengthening the local community and offering unique artistic experiences to both residents and visitors.

Perhaps this festival was the inspiration for Christoforos Papakaliatis to create the captivating series “MAESTRO” which was filmed in Paxos.

Whether you're looking for cultural experiences that will transport you through time, or you want to experience the pulse of contemporary creation, the Ionian festivals promise moments full of inspiration, color and rhythm. All that remains is to choose which will be your must-visit stop this year—or even better, to experience… all of them!
