The George & Mary Vergottis Foundation bids farewell to Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Athens, Fotis Pavlatos, and honors his memory with a symbolic donation to the Cephalonian Orphanage "O Sotiros". The Foundation's press release follows.
In Memory
OF FOTIS PAVLATO
Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Athens
Professor Fotis Pavlatos recently passed away, full of years. A high-level scientist, a charismatic teacher devoted to his work, and a doctor with exemplary responsibility and particularly humane behavior.
He spent his entire career at the University of Athens, at Laiko Hospital, except for his postgraduate training years in America. At a young age, in America, he devised a method for studying the adrenal glands that has appeared in books worldwide under his name for 55 years. The European Society of Endocrinology, at one of its Conferences, awarded him a special prize for completing 50 years of study and research contribution.
As a teacher, he remained in the minds of his thousands of students as a role model.
In the social sphere, he left his mark as president of the Hellenic Medical Society for nuclear and biochemical threats. At that time, the book "Grigoris Lambrakis, the Pioneering Pacifist Doctor" was published with his preface.
Those who knew him, his colleagues, students, and patients, mention his name with appreciation and respect. And this is not only an honor to his memory but an example for the generations of today and tomorrow in our society.
The George & Mary Vergottis Foundation honored Fotis Pavlatos in February 2016 for his timeless contribution to Medicine, Research, and Teaching, organizing an event in his honor at the Amphitheater of Rector Alki Argyriadi of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA). Within the framework of the same event, the Foundation also awarded the top three successful candidates from each direction from the Prefecture of Kefalonia in the Panhellenic Examinations of 2015, with the late Pavlatos presenting the praises to the distinguished students and addressing them with their first university speech-lesson.
Today, following a unanimous decision by the Foundation's Board of Directors, his memory is honored with a symbolic donation to the Cephalonian Orphanage "O Sotiros". The choice of the recipient of the donation was deemed perfectly fitting with the generosity and social contribution that characterized the deceased.
