Popular Association: Request to convene D.S. for the SPM of the Ionian Sea Park

SUBJECT: Request from the Popular Association to the President of the Municipal Council of Lixouri Municipality for the convocation of a Municipal Council meeting to discuss the Special Environmental Study (SES) for the Ionian Sea Park

The Popular Association of Lixouri Municipality submits this request for the immediate introduction for discussion in the Municipal Council of the Special Environmental Study (SES) for the Ionian Sea Park. This specific issue concerns the entire society of our Municipality and particularly the fishermen whom it directly affects, as well as a number of other professional sectors.

As the Popular Association, we believe that with this specific study —the implementation of which has been pending for about 30 years and is directly linked to the implementation of the Natura 2000 framework— the popular interests and the professional survival of the workers in the area are brutally affected.

At the same time, under the pretext of protecting the marine and wider environment, large business activities are being defined and licensed in the marine zone by Greek and supranational groups. Indicatively, these include:

• Offshore drilling blocks.

• The installation of wind farms.

• The creation and expansion of Organized Aquaculture Development Areas (POAY).

The legalization and development of the above activities in the Ionian will have uncontrolled effects on the health and safety of the people, as well as on the survival of the sectors directly or indirectly affected by them.

For the above reasons and before the said Study is legalized by Presidential Decree, we invite you to convene a meeting of the Municipal Council on this specific issue, in order for the appropriate decisions to be taken.
