Popular Association: Request for a Municipal Council meeting concerning the Special Environmental Study of the Ionian Sea Park

SUBJECT: Request of the Popular Association to the President of the Municipal Council of Lixouri for a Municipal Council meeting to discuss the Special Environmental Study (SES) for the Ionian Sea Park

The Popular Association of Lixouri Municipality submits this request for the immediate introduction for discussion in the Municipal Council of the Special Environmental Study (SES) for the Ionian Sea Park. This specific issue concerns the entire society of our Municipality and particularly the fishermen, whom it directly affects, as well as a number of other professional sectors.

As the Popular Association, we believe that this specific study—the implementation of which has been pending for about 30 years and is directly linked to the implementation of the Natura 2000 framework—brutally impacts popular interests and the professional survival of workers in the region.

At the same time, under the pretext of protecting the marine and wider environment, large business activities are being delineated and licensed in the maritime zone by Greek and transnational groups. Indicatively mentioned are:

• The offshore drilling blocks.

• The installation of wind farms.

• The creation and expansion of Organized Aquaculture Development Areas (POAY).

The legalization and development of the above activities in the Ionian will have uncontrolled effects on the health and safety of the people, as well as on the survival of the sectors directly or indirectly affected by them.

For the above reasons and before the said Study is legalized by Presidential Decree, we invite you to convene a Municipal Council meeting on this specific issue, in order for the relevant decisions to be made.
