Electric Cars: The "Revolution" and their Appearance on the Island

The global transition towards sustainability and green mobility has found fertile ground in Greece, with electric cars constituting a growing and dynamic sector of the market. More and more citizens are choosing to use electric vehicles as they are more environmentally friendly, operating costs are lower, and comfort and ease of driving are key features. European governments are constantly promoting electromobility as the path to a green future. In Greece, the government has created certain programs, with which it tries to promote electromobility by offering benefits for consumers who choose to purchase and use electric vehicles. In Kefalonia, this development has begun to take shape, and the increasing adoption of electromobility is a fact, as charging infrastructures for electric cars are multiplying, strengthening the market for such vehicles.

The Evolution of Electromobility in Greece

In recent years, the use of electric vehicles has increased significantly. The Greek government has implemented various incentive policies to boost the use of electric vehicles, such as subsidies for purchasing electric vehicles, as well as investments in charging infrastructure. For this reason, the program "Moving Electrically" has been created, where citizens have the opportunity to apply to benefit from the purchase of an electric vehicle. Thus, by registering for this program, citizens can receive a 30% subsidy for the purchase of an electric vehicle (up to 8000 euros), and also for long-term leases. Furthermore, there is an option for scrapping with a reward of 1000 euros, while the subsidy can be increased depending on the criteria met by each individual. Similar opportunities exist for companies. With these subsidies, the rates of electric vehicle use are constantly increasing, making it easier for citizens to acquire an electric vehicle.

The government has also created the "Green Taxis" program, through which beneficiaries can benefit. The program includes a reward amounting to 40% of the pre-tax retail price, with a maximum amount of 17,500 euros, for purely electric cars. Also, there is a reward of 5000 euros for the mandatory scrapping of a taxi vehicle, as well as a subsidy of 500 euros for the purchase of a "smart" charger. There are additional privileges for different categories of owners which beneficiaries can find on the program's website. This program aims to increase zero-CO2 emission electric taxi vehicles through these financial incentives.

The expansion of the charging network is an important factor that allows electric vehicle owners to use their vehicles with confidence and convenience. The creation of more charging points in public spaces, shopping centers, and businesses has significantly contributed to the increase in the electric vehicle market. Today, there are 5556 charging points across the country, a number that is constantly increasing. Citizens can find all charging points using the official government website (gov.gr) and specialized applications. Many businesses choose to install electric vehicle chargers, which plays a crucial role in business revenue. Thus, charging infrastructures are gradually multiplying in all regions of the country, encouraging the use of electric vehicles.

It is a fact that increased awareness of environmental issues and climate change has led more people to consider alternative mobility solutions, such as electric cars. Through the "Moving Electrically" program, anyone interested can learn about the sustainability of electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are a more environmentally friendly solution compared to conventional vehicles due to lower emissions, provided they are charged with electricity from clean energy sources. The use of electric vehicles reduces air pollution in urban areas, as they do not produce atmospheric pollutant emissions associated with fuel combustion. It is also a way to curb global warming from the greenhouse effect, while noise pollution in cities is reduced as electric vehicles are almost silent. Thus, acquiring such a vehicle is a "green" choice, contributing to reducing human impact on the environment and promoting more sustainable transportation.

Furthermore, the continuous improvement of electric vehicle technology, as well as the increase in battery life and performance, has made electric cars a more attractive option for many consumers. The charging time for electric cars is becoming shorter and shorter, which facilitates drivers and reduces waiting times, while the ability to recover battery through braking is another positive factor. Moreover, technological advancements in electric motors lead to increased efficiency and effectiveness, offering better acceleration and responsiveness, as well as greater fuel economy. Maintenance costs are also lower than conventional cars. All these factors contribute to promoting electromobility in Greece.

The "green" technology of electric vehicles and maintenance costs

There is extensive discussion about how ecological electric cars actually are and how much "greener" they are compared to conventional ones. This has to do with the method of electricity production in each country. Subsequently, electricity production is based on the cost of fossil fuels used. The energy crisis that occurred in 2022 forced governments to turn to renewable energy sources as fossil fuel prices skyrocketed, especially the price of natural gas. Also, with the European reform, an attempt was made to create a consumer protection zone so that the price of electricity would not depend so much on fossil fuel prices.

The cost of charging and maintaining electric cars is a significant advantage compared to traditional internal combustion vehicles. Charging an electric car usually costs less than the equivalent amount of fuel required to power a gasoline vehicle. Additionally, maintaining an electric car is typically cheaper, as there are not many moving parts such as internal combustion engines or exhaust systems that require continuous maintenance and replacement. Furthermore, many electric vehicles offer extended warranties for their batteries, thereby reducing the cost of replacement in case of problems. Overall, these economic benefits make electric cars an increasingly attractive option for consumers, encouraging them to adopt electromobility.

    Electric cars in Kefalonia

Recently, charging facilities have started appearing on the island in public spaces, hotels, and businesses, making it easier for residents and visitors to integrate electric vehicles into their lifestyle. As a popular tourist destination, the presence of electric vehicles on the island can be an additional attraction for tourists seeking a more sustainable travel experience.

In our discussions with car rental companies, we saw the issue from different perspectives. One of the companies seemed positive towards the use of electric cars and will even offer, as they informed us, electric cars starting next year. In contrast, another company expressed a negative opinion about electromobility, telling us that they do not consider them user-friendly, in their opinion, and that their charging method is more harmful to the environment compared to conventional cars, which categorizes them as "not green." This company is not willing to add electric cars to its services. So, as we saw, there are diverse opinions on electromobility.

However, it is a fact that electromobility is continuously developing on our island as well. More and more businesses are installing electric chargers, making the use of electric vehicles easier. It is certainly also a step that has financial benefits, as they can profit by charging for vehicle charging. Moreover, installing a charger also contributes to an increase in visitors, as they are more likely to choose that specific business. The "Charge Everywhere" program offers benefits to businesses that can participate in installing electric chargers to create a public charging network across the country. The program includes financial benefits, installation, and connection of chargers to the network. Thus, installing charging infrastructures becomes more attractive, and many businesses are moving in this direction. Currently, there are at least 15 electric vehicle charging points in Kefalonia.

The Municipality of Argostoli has prepared an electric vehicle charging plan (SFIO), which, however, has not yet commenced. The plan, with a budget of 39,680 euros, includes the siting of public recharging points and parking spaces for electric vehicles with the aim of developing a recharging network. Since the summer of 2022, the municipality has been included in the SFIO program, where an open electronic consultation was held for the participation of all residents or visitors of the municipality. Through recording opinions via questionnaires, the exact locations for installing chargers were selected, which, however, have not been installed. Thus, the plan included 31 public charging points, of which 20 are in Argostoli. Additionally, it foresees one charging point in Agkonas, 3 in the Municipal Unit of Livathos, one in the Municipal Unit of Omala, and 6 in the Municipal Unit of Eleios-Pronnoi. The municipality had even published photos with the exact locations of the chargers. The municipal representative on the matter declined to answer our questions. So, two years after its preparation, we are still waiting for the implementation of the plan.

It is undeniable that electromobility is significantly increasing in all European countries, with Greece following suit. This development is slowly starting to be seen in Kefalonia as well. With the increase in the availability and variety of electric models, consumers in Kefalonia are increasingly choosing this green alternative. The prospects are encouraging as technology continues to improve and prices become more competitive. With the cooperation of manufacturers, government agencies, and society, we can create an environment that will favor the transition to more sustainable and clean mobility, while encouraging economic development and improving the quality of life on the island.
