The George & Maris Vergottis Foundation honored with the Efkranti Award for Social Contribution, marking 50 years of work
The George & Maris Vergottis Foundation was honored with the Efkranti Award for Social Contribution in a landmark year as it completes 50 years of continuous presence and contribution.

2026 marks a special landmark year for the George & Maris Vergottis Foundation, which completes 50 years of continuous presence and social contribution.
The completion of half a century of action coincided with a particularly prestigious distinction for the Foundation, as it was honored with the Efkranti Award for Social Contribution during the 18th awards ceremony. This institution has been organized by the historic magazine Naftika Chronika since 2008 and is now established in the awareness of the entire industry as one of the most important events for the Greek maritime family.
With its decision, the judging committee of the Efkranti Awards highlighted the long-standing and substantial contribution of the George & Maris Vergottis Foundation both to the society of Kefalonia and more broadly, recognizing the multifaceted work it has performed for five decades.
The award honors both the contemporary work of the Foundation—which, centered on people, education, and cultural heritage, keeps the identity of Kefalonia alive and substantially strengthens the island's education, culture, and social cohesion—as well as the vision of its founders, George Ch. Vergottis and Maris Vergottis.
In its reasoned decision, the judging committee pointed out that through a wide range of initiatives, the Foundation has consistently supported education, sciences, culture, and social cohesion on the island of Kefalonia. At the same time, it highlighted its "quiet" but essential activity, which consistently continues the legacy of philanthropy left by its founders, individuals distinguished for their intellectual cultivation, modesty, and sensitivity toward their fellow human beings.
The distinction was based, among other things, on the Foundation's enduring contribution to the study and promotion of the Cephalonian and broader Ionian spirit and culture, with its activities centered at the iconic Cultural Center and the "Syssitio" building in Kourkoumelata, which host scientific and artistic events. Particular emphasis was placed on the practical support of the younger generation, as the Foundation has supported more than 150 distinguished pupils and students from the island through financial aid and scholarships, while maintaining unbreakable ties with the Merchant Marine Academy of the Ionian Islands, annually rewarding the top graduating cadet. Furthermore, the Foundation provides assistance to charitable organizations and bodies active in Kefalonia, contributing substantially to the island's intellectual, cultural, and social progress.
The award was presented during a special ceremony held on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the Benaki Museum on Piraeus Street, serving as a culmination of both the Foundation's long-term contribution and its close connection with the shipping community.
This specific distinction carries special symbolism, as it comes from the historic magazine of Greek shipping, highlighting the strong ties of the Vergottis family to the sea. With a long maritime history, the family distinguished itself and prospered through shipping entrepreneurship and, following the long tradition of philanthropy of the Greeks of the sea, returned a significant part of its success to its place of origin, also through the Foundation.
During his speech, Mr. Gerasimos Vergottis referred to the original idea behind its founding, which has its roots in the great contribution of George Ch. Vergottis to Kefalonia following the devastating earthquakes of 1953.
Characteristic of the ethos and vision of the national benefactor was the fact that just 48 hours after the disaster, George Ch. Vergottis sent a telegram to his fellow villagers: "Fortunately, beyond minor injuries, we have no deaths to mourn. Do not worry about your homes. We will rebuild our village better, much better than before." And indeed, he did so.
The award was received by Mr. Gerasimos Vergottis, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the George & Maris Vergottis Foundation, from Mr. Leonidas Kontakos, Managing Director of ERGOMATIC, the sponsor of this specific award.
The event was presented by Kathimerini journalist Ms. Margarita Pournara. Speeches were delivered by Ms. Irini Geroulanou, President of the Board of Trustees of the Benaki Museum, the Deputy Minister of Shipping of the Republic of Cyprus Ms. Marina Hadjimanolis, Dr. Elias Bissias, Editorial Consultant of Naftika Chronika, and Mr. Giannis Theodoropoulos, Editor-in-Chief of Naftika Chronika.
The awards ceremony was attended by representatives of the country's political and military leadership, as well as prominent members of the Greek shipping community, representing institutional bodies of ship-ownership and maritime labor, the academic community, culture, and the country's broader shipping industry.
